King Mountain is an ancient landform, typical of the Algoma Highlands, which stands on the horizon of our viewscape and our minds as a constant reminder of the power and beauty of nature. King Mountain is also a geological legacy, a remnant of ancient landforms which have endured through the centuries, including the last continental glaciation.
The AHC is thrilled to announce our recent major success in acquisition of the King Mountain property! In combination with our prior land trust holdings at the Robertson Lake cliffs, this acquisition consolidates a platform of approx. 1215 ha. (3000 ac.) for conservation, silent-sport recreation, environmental education and promotion of sustainable forest management.
Our fund-raising challenges are ongoing. Although we raised most of the money needed to purchase the King Mountain Property, we fell 20% short of our $1.5 million goal and had to borrow the funds to make the acquisition deadline set out by Astina Forest AG. This "mortgage" on the land must be paid off by November 30th, 2011 or we may be forced to forfeit part of our land.
Although our immediate focus is paying down the King Mountain debt, we must also generate funds to support ongoing stewardship and maintenance costs of the land.
To satisfy this need, the AHC will continue to work hard to acquire corporate sponsors and foundation support; seek new private donors, and foster continued relationships with existing donors.
We must not become complacent simply because the land is now secure!
We are very optimistic and enthusiastic about our future! There is real potential to expand our land ownership, partnerships and influence, and your support brings us that much closer to realizing our goals!
